A tiny little opera company in Newfoundland, of all places, with minimal marketing budgets wanted to make a big splash to draw off-island attention to their cultural programs. To say we courted controversy is an understatement, as our launch billboard (and it's ready-in-the-wings replacement) were featured stories in every major-market newspaper and TV news program across Canada.

The Remembrance Day poppy is the enduring symbol of Canada's honouring of its veterans. To promote the world premiere of Ours, a newly commissioned opera about the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, which was massacred at The Battle of the Somme in World War I, we used the poppy to underscore the magnitude of the regiment's losses and as a testament to the courage of those who carried on.
